About The Stop & Shop

Stop & Shop may be traced back to 1892 when Solomon and Jeanie Rabinowitz started the Greenie Store at 134 Salem Street in Boston’s North End. Until 1908, this shop was located at this address. Stop & Shop was started in 1914 in Somerville, Massachusetts, by the Rabinowitz family as the Economy Grocery Stores Company, according to the company’s website. After four years, the shop decided to embrace Piggly Wiggly’s new self-service supermarket format. In 1914, a second store opened, followed by many more the following year, and by 1917, the company had grown to 15 locations. Initially, the stores simply offered groceries, but meats, fruit, milk, dairy, and certain frozen goods were soon added. They, like A & P, were forerunners of the contemporary grocery store, providing a diverse range of foods under one roof.

The stores ranged in size from 10,000 to 15,000 square feet (930 to 1,390 m2) and were located in the Boston and Springfield metro regions’ downtown and inner-city neighborhoods. By 1946, the network had grown to 86 stores, and the name was changed to Stop & Shop, Inc.

  1. I hate the digital coupon feature __I do not have a smart phone so can not use that and can not find printable coupons on computer despite trying endless times–This is also true of a friend who does have a smart phone and has difficulty getting them to load on her phone.

If you have sale items they should be easier to access-either a coupon in the flyer or no coupon needed.

    • I am also in full agreement i have found it extremely difficult to obtain the digital coupons. Why has Stop and Shop made it so difficult to get the digital coupons. They should at least explain how to obtain them for computer users.

  2. store is typically clean with friendly and knowledgeable staff. some products are difficult to find, but that appears to be with all stores at present. my issue this week is that there were several customers – at least 4 – shopping in the store without masks which are mandatory in NY. the entry doors should be monitored again as they were earlier in the pandemic.

    • guess you haven’t shopped in the S&S in Canaan, Ct lately ’cause their veggies are all dried up — if you find any. Needless to say their shelves are mostly empty. Looked to buy shells to stuff for the last month & the aisle was 2 days ago as it was a month ago. Such a shame. The place is clean & everybody is helpful but that doesn’t fill the bags of groceries I need. I love fresh veggies & are “forced” to go to the Big Y where it’s so full of fresh veggies & even the shelves are well stacked & this is at 7 am in the morning. S&S in all my yrs (I’m almost 87) have I ever been disappointed in a store in my life.

  4. Please install kiosks in the stores so that we can load our digital coupons. Your website is always down. Other grocery stores have in-store options for loading coupons and these are very convenient.

  6. The use of digital coupons and go items is a poor choice for older customers that have problems using a computer or cell phone. I am a degreed engineer and even though I can use the computer, it is a pain in the neck.

  7. bought oatmeal raisin cookies was so glad they were back – they were terrible – they were skinny and so hard to chew. asked why so skinny and the person at the bakery said they felt the same way – i asked them to notify management about the problem. it was like you did not want to put enough dough in it. They used to be so good – they said they came in that way and they only cooked them. Please fix this problem. your cookies used to be good. it is like you do not want to bake them good anymore – no excuse for this. Add enough dough to make the cookie soft and chewable again. I thought you cared about QUALITY.

  8. I only go to stop and shop for items that are on sale and hard to find Boars Head Deli products. Your prices are higher than most other stores . I have recently gone to the LIDL store the items I buy regularly. Their prices are great.

  9. Stop and Shop has been a family favorite supermarket for many years. The quality of the products is excellent. But its prices are now 50% to 100% higher than the prices at PriceRite. Only when certain products are on sale at a low price do I go to Stop and Shop these days.

  10. So happy our Stop & Shop has a Manager that really cares about his store, customers and staff. It is now a pleasure to shop at the store, it is clean, they are trying to get all products in and their staff is happier. Bill you did all this in just a short time! I hope you stay in Berkeley Heights for a long time. Also A shout out to Jenny, she has been awesome also.
Keep up the good work, we appreciate your efforts!

  11. Your prices are extremely high and you never have anything on shelves. I can’t get Stress free tea or stacy chips in cheese flavor. Not a good selections of meats. Deli items are extremely high. With all thats going on in the world today, you need a device on your doors that alert when someone with a gun enters your stores. These are stressful times and people are not nice. I was not comfortable shopping because many suspicious men with backpacks where in store.

  12. Senior citizens don’t have cell phones so they are unable to use your digital coupons. Coupons should be available to all customers . there should be no digital coupons

  13. Myself and other seniors no longer shop at Stop and Shop since the digital coupons are beyond our abilities and too tiresome to consider. When digital coupons end, I will return to Stop and Shop, since the stores are well kept and are located nearby.

  14. I think the digital coupon program is insulting to customers….shopped at Stop & Shop today but it’s been a long time since my prior visit……I have had a Stop and Shop card for as long as they existed. Why would you not give me the best price available without requiring additional steps. This show a lack of appreciation for your customers.

  16. I live close to Stop & Shop in East Haven Trolley Square and have shopped there since they opened and it was convenient. Since they opened express shopping (do all the work yourself) they only have 3 counters open with1 being 12 items or less,. This does not work well as now you still end up packing your own bags. Need to hire baggers or cashiers that will assist the elderly. I also agree that your digitsal coupons don’t work for those without smart phones.

  18. I am not at all in agreement with the policy you have for the digital coupons. Since they did not have any more of the item I wanted to purchase, I was told I could not receive an rain check. Not fair. This is not the first time this has happened to me.

  19. There is a Stop and Shop near me on High Street in Torrington, CT. I have shopped there for years. However, I am pulling my loyalty out from that store that is 2 miles away from where I live and am going to Stop and Shop 5 miles away. They have delicious shell fish and lots of cat food. I can’t get cat food in the High Street Stop and Shop. When I talked to the manager, she said that they are not allowed to order food where as the Stop and Shop 5 miles away on Torringford Street can order whatever they want and get it. So much of the isle on High Street is empty. Their veggies are old. They keep telling me to come back and check to see if they got it but that they never know what is coming. If Torringford Street Stop and Shop ever gets this difficult to shop at then I will shop at the local Big Y. Everything is fresh there.

  22. Stop and Shop should take a look at Market Basket.
I have started shopping there even though there are two S+Ss closer to me.
I do not like self check out. MB does not have them.
I do not like to pay for bags. MB bags are free.
Hot foods and prepared foods are available and taste good.
    No empty shelves.
Plenty of employees that are easy to find and helpful.
Cashiers are friendly and fun. They have baggers to bag your purchase.
Of the many cashier lines, most of them are open.
And many prices are cheaper. eg: 1 gallon skim milk 2.59, Yours 4.89

  23. This is as close as i came to breaking in to the survey. For the second time this year I caught the Peekskill Stop and Shop bait and switching product. they advertise Ribeye at $7.99, small print bone in. They only had signs up for Ribeye, no further designation. there were 3 pieces present, each labeled Ribeye. there was no sale. About 3 months ago they did it with chicken breast but that time I did not discover it until I got home. The check out clerk sent me to the office where they said there was nothing they could do other than to tell the manager I intend to choice other chains.

  24. I used to shop in the providence store which is 5 minutes from my house. I have now switched to Market basket which is 15 minutes away and is in Massachusetts. The prices are cheaper they have 20 cashiers and baggers and don’t have self check out lanes. I am not a employee of SS so I shouldn’t have to scan items and bag them.

  25. Stop & Shop Windsor CT recently stopped carrying Sclafani products, including the breadcrumbs we have been buying for years. They also, apparently, stopped carrying Israeli couscous. Espresso options are dwindling and getting pricey. They recently moved bialys from the freezer to a location outside the bakery and added a label that is wrapped around the top of the bag and requires you to destroy the bag to get the bialy out (which serves to make the remaining bialys go stale a lot faster). The bialys are one of the few reasons we still go to Stop & Shop…
